Dr. Chikwinya went on to complete externships including the Audie L. Murphy Veteran Affairs Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, INSIGHT Vision Rehabilitation in Warwick, RI, and the Naval Health Clinic at Quantico, VA. His training continued by completing a residency in Low Vision and Geriatric Ocular Disease in Chicago, IL through the Illinois Eye Institute and Chicago Lighthouse. Through his residency, Dr. C gained extensive training in managing chronic ocular disease such as dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He also gained great experience in working with the blind and visually impaired, rehabilitating those most affected by ocular disease and injury. Since moving back to the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Chikwinya has worked all along the I-5 corridor providing eye care services to the South Sound communities he grew up in. In addition to routine eye care, Dr. C has also provided specialty eye services including vision rehabilitation, pediatric eye care, as well as co-managing surgical procedures and outcomes. Dr. Chikwinya is strongly devoted to community service and has performed vision screenings around the country as a student and as an optometrist. He is an active member of the optometric community with memberships to the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), American Optometric Association (AOA), National Optometric Association (NOA), Optometric Physicians of Washington (OPW), and Pierce County Optometric Society (PCOS). Dr. C has presented research and multiple case reports at national conferences such as the AOA Optometry’s Meeting and Heart of America Eye Care Congress. In his free time he enjoys outdoor recreation, sports, music and theatre.
